Loss Reporting and Procedures Print this page if possible What do I do? If you have sustained a loss please advise us without delay, if at all possible. On weekends, after hours and during holidays expect delays in contacting our office. In the meantime, be sure to protect your vessel or property from further damage. This is your first priority. Retain receipts for any emergency expenditures you have made. Once you have made arrangements to protect your property from further damage or loss you should then report the accident to us Remain calm. We are here to assist you. Injuries If someone has been injured they must seek medical attention. Do it now. Sinking or stranding If the insured vessel is sinking you must immediately make arrangements to have the vessel pumped out, raised, and taken to a nearby boat yard for hauling. Fires or other losses If your property has burned or suffered other types of losses you must protect your property for looting and further damage. The best way to do this is emergency repairs such as boarding over windows, applying patches to roofs or hulls and so on to reduce continued or ongoing damage or loss. Your insurer will pay you for sensible emergency repairs as long as you keep copies of receipts for labour and materials. Sensible repairs are the type of emergency measures you would carry out if you had no insurance and needed to get through a weekend or holiday before you could start rebuilding or final repairs. Theft
If you have had a theft of your property or of the vessel, report the
theft to the local police or marine authority. Do not delay. If possible, take
photos of any damage due to the theft. Please obtain a copy of the police report
for your insurer. Also obtain the name or badge number of the officer who took
the report. When we have been made aware of your loss we will report it to your insurer. They will assign a loss adjuster to contact you and take your statement regarding the loss and adjust the claim. Due to the international aspects of cruising it may be difficult to contact you on a timely basis. Despite this, we have had mostly good experiences with insurers, adjusters and loss surveyors. Be reasonable and sensible. If you report your claim to us at 9:00 do not expect the adjuster to telephone you at 9:30. That only happens on television, despite the fact that we urge insurers to contact you immediately. Keep in mind, after the initial excitement and urgency has been dealt with, the adjuster has other files to handle as well, particularly when there are catastrophic losses, such as a hurricane. If in doubt contact us for assistance. We are here to help you at all times. |
